Dolet 3 for Sibelius

Recordare is proud to present our newest member of the Dolet® family, Dolet 3 for Sibelius. Dolet was a famous French translator of the 16th-century. Our Dolet software is also a translator, but this time between different music programs that previously would never talk to each other. Purchase it now!

Dolet 3 for Sibelius is a plug-in for Sibelius 4 and Sibelius 5, written in ManuScript. It exports Sibelius files to MusicXML 1.1 format. Use Dolet 3 to:

  • Share music you have created in Sibelius with people who use Finale, Notion, and the many other programs that support MusicXML.
  • Read Sibelius 4 and Sibelius 5 files into Sibelius 1.4 (requires Finale 2000/2001 and Dolet 4 for Finale, or use Recordare's file translation services).
  • Archive your Sibelius work into an open, text-based format that can be read by all sorts of programs - including the text editor on your computer.

If you are already using Dolet 1 for Sibelius, you will be delighted at all the new and improved features available in Dolet 3, including support for articulations, symbols, and much more. See the Dolet 3 version history for a full list of improvements.

Music interchange between these programs has been limited to MIDI files. MIDI is a great format for electronic musical instruments, but not for printed music. MusicXML lets you exchange the vast majority of information contained in a notation file, including rests, repeats, dynamics, lyrics, slurs, tempo marks, and much more.

To see how this works compared to Standard MIDI Files, watch the YouTube video or the higher-resolution video demonstration (5.5 MB). For a quick comparison, here's the start of a song by Franz Liszt as entered into Sibelius 4.1:

Es muß ein Wunderbares sein - Sibelius original

Here's how this gets translated into Finale 2007 using Standard MIDI Files. You might as well just start over rather than try to use this:

Es muß ein Wunderbares sein - Finale via MIDI

Compare that interpretation to how the song gets translated into Finale 2007 using a MusicXML 1.1 file. Now this is usable! The staves, rhythms, lyrics, articulations, slurs, dynamics, tempo, title, and composer are all present and accounted for.

Es muß ein Wunderbares sein - Finale via MusicXML

The Dolet translator is a plug-in for the Sibelius notation program. To use it, you must have Sibelius 4 or 5 installed on your system. If you are using Sibelius 2.1 or 3.1, use the Dolet 1 for Sibelius plug-in instead.

Note that Dolet 3 for Sibelius writes out MusicXML files, but does not read in MusicXML files. Sibelius 4 and 5 come with a built-in MusicXML file importer.

Dolet 3 for Sibelius software is available under the terms of Recordare's software license agreement. More information about installing and using Dolet 3 is available in the V3 readme file. You can see what has changed recently at the Dolet 3 version history.

Dolet 4 for Sibelius is currently in beta test. Purchase Dolet 3 for Sibelius now and you will be eligible for a free upgrade to Dolet 4 for Sibelius when it becomes available later this year. Note that Dolet 4 for Sibelius will only work with Sibelius 5, so purchase Dolet 3 now if you plan to stay with Sibelius 4 for the time being.
